Third Antiphon (Beatitudes)

8 Troparia: all from the Octoechos

  1. We offer Thee the voice of the thief and cry aloud to Thee: Remember us, O Saviour in Thy Kingdom.
  2. We bring Thee the Cross for the forgiveness of offenses. For us hast Thou accepted it, O Lover of mankind.
  3. We venerate, O Master, Thy tomb and Thy rising, through which Thou hast delivered the world from corruption, O Lover of Mankind.
  4. By Thy death, O Lord, death has been swallowed up, and by Thy Resurrection, Saviour, has the world been saved.
  5. Those sleeping in darkness have seen Thee, the Light, and they have risen out of the nethermost parts of hell, O Christ.
  6. Risen from the tomb Thou hast met the women bearing myrrh and told the disciples to proclaim Thy Rising.
  7. Let us all glorify the Father, worship the Son and faithfully sing the praises of the Holy Spirit.
  8. Rejoice! Throne in the form of fire: Rejoice! unwedded Bride. Rejoice! to Thee O Virgin who hast brought forth God for man.

Troparion of the Resurrection (Tone 2)

When Thou didst descend unto death, O Life Immortal, / then didst Thou slay Hades with the lightning of Thy Divinity. / And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, / all the Hosts of the Heavens cried out: / O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee.

Troparion of the Temple

Troparion Of St. Maximus (Tone 8)

O instructor of Orthodoxy, teacher of piety and purity, beacon of all the world, divinely inspired adornment of monastics: O all-wise Maximus, by thy doctrines thou hast enlightened all. O harp of the Spirit, entreat Christ God, that our souls be saved.

Troparion of St. Neophytus (Tone 4)

In his sufferings, O Lord, thy martyr Neophytus received an imperishable crown from Thee, our God. For, possessed of Thy might, he set at nought the tormenters and crushed the feeble audacity of the demons. By his supplications save Thou our souls!

Kontakion of the Resurrection (Tone 2)

Thou didst arise from the tomb, O omnipotent Saviour, / and Hades was terrified on beholding the wonder; / and the dead arose, and creation at the sight thereof rejoiceth with Thee. / And Adam also is joyful, // and the world, O my Saviour, praiseth Thee for ever.

Kontakion of the Temple

Kontakion of St. Maximus (Tone 6)

The thrice-radiant light which abode in thy soul showed thee forth as a chosen vessel, O most blessed one, revealing things divine to the ends of the earth. O blessed Maximus, recount understanding of things hard to comprehend and manifestly preach to all the transcendent and unoriginate Trinity.

O Protection of Christians (Tone 6)

O Protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, / unchanging Mediation before the Creator / despise not the voice of the sinner's prayer / but in that Thou art good / come quickly to help us who call upon Thee in faith / make speed to intercede and make haste to supplicate / O Theotokos // Who dost ever protect those that honor Thee.

The Prokeimenon in the 2nd Tone

The Lord is my strength and my song, // and He is become my salvation. (Ps. 117:14)

Vs/ With chastisement hath the Lord chastened me, but He hath not given me over unto death. (Ps. 117:18)

And in the 4th Tone

In the saints that are in His earth hath the Lord been wondrous; He hath wrought all His desires in them.

Epistle: (2 Corinthians 6:1-10; Hebrews 11:33-40)

Brethren: We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.) Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

Brethren, all the saints through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

The Alleluia in the 2nd Tone

(NO PAUSE between Alleluia and first verse)

The Lord hear thee in the day of affliction; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee. (Ps. 19:1)

Vs/ O Lord, save the king, and hearken unto us in the day when we call upon Thee. (Ps. 19:9)

And in the 4th Tone

The righteous cried, and the Lord heard them, and He delivered them out of all their tribulations

Gospel: (Matthew 25: 14-30; Luke 12:8-12)

The Lord said: The kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Lord said: Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

Communion Verse

Praise the Lord in the heavens, praise him in the highest.

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; praise is meet for the upright.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
