Explanation of Scripture read by Orthodox Christians on the 12th Tuesday after Pentecost 2 Corinthians 5:15-21 Mark 1:16-22 QUESTION 1 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. (Vs. 16) Was this the first time Simon and Andrew had encountered Jesus? Explain. QUESTION 2 "And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. {20} And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him. " (Mark 1:19,20) Zebedee was left behind, but what of James' and John's mother? Do we know her name, and if she followed Jesus? QUESTION 3 "And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught. 22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes." (Mark 1:21,22) What is the most important thing we must do to have authority when we teach or even speak of holy things, according to the example of Jesus Christ? QUESTION 4 " And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them,and rose again. " (2 Cor 5:15) This is a difficult saying. What does Paul indicate by stating that we should not henceforth live unto ourselves? QUESTION 5 "Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. " (2 Cor 5:16") What does St Paul mean by saying: "know we no man after the flesh"? QUESTION 6 "Even though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now we know Him so no more."
