My Beloved Friend
Irene Lewis

How is it that I forget thee,
My Beloved Friend?
My selfishness is great, I see;
And still for me you bend
Down from Heaven's curtain
To walk along with me.

You sing the praise of God
When I neglect to pray -
You help me find the words
That I would never say -
You guide me with your loving hand,
And guard me night and day.
Please, Heaven-sent, forgive me,
When by sin I go astray!

I pray thee, help me, holy angel,
Of the Kingdom High;
Lead me, guard me, save me
When my end is coming nigh.
Please greet me when I die!

How is it that I forget thee,
My Beloved Friend?
You are indeed my closest friend
To intercede that I
May live the life eternal
And repentant tears may cry.
I ask our Lord to help me
Remember you are by
And seek thee, Guardian Angel,
Before the end is nigh.
